You can access the full-text of magazine articles, newspapers, encyclopedias and other online information through these databases. When accessing most of these resources from outside of the library, you will be prompted for your local public library card number.


These resources are paid for by the Province of British Columbia.

EBSCOhost periodicals - Search the content of more than 10,000 popular and academic magazines, reference books, plus images, covering all subject areas, from current events and history to the arts and sciences. Many Canadian titles are included. Narrow results by date, subject, publication, etc.

Canadian Newsstand [ProQuest] – Full-text access to over 200 Canadian newspapers, including The Globe and Mail, The Vancouver Sun and many local BC papers. Coverage back to the 1970s and1980s for some newspapers.

British Columbia Statistics – Statistics on population, business, the economy, labour and society. From BCStats, the central statistical agency of the Province of British Columbia.
Access 2006 Census full (31 page) profiles or any item with a "key" icon beside it is available here. (Note: Remote access is permitted if your library can provide authentication)

Canadian Reference Centre [EBSCO] – Access “Canadian content” in domestic and international magazines, newspapers, newswires and reference books. Also includes biographies and a large image collection of photos, maps, and flags.

GreenFile [EBSCO] – Provides information related to all aspects of human impact on the environment, from global warming to recycling to alternate fuel sources and more. Identifies or provides full-text access to scholarly, government and general-interest periodicals and reports.
Business / Professional

Business Source Premier [EBSCO] – Includes more than 2,000 business journals covering topics such as marketing, management, accounting and finance, as well as information about specific trades, industries and professions. Additional content includes market research reports, industry reports, country reports, company profiles and SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analyses.

Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts with Full Text (LISTA) [EBSCO] – A specialized database for library staff covering more than 500 journals. Subject coverage includes librarianship, classification, cataloguing, collection development, online information retrieval and more. Many titles include reviews or announcements of new books.

Professional Development Collection [EBSCO] – A specialized resource for teachers and educators, providing access to over 500 education journals, including more than 350 peer-reviewed titles. This database also contains educational reports.

Regional Business News [EBSCO] – A collection of regional U.S. business periodicals and newswires that includes some international business news. Contains the most recent 30 days of information from each wire source.

Do-It-Yourself

Auto Repair Reference Centre [EBSCO] – Repair procedures for most domestic and imported vehicles, going back to the 1950s for vintage makes. Also includes technical service bulletins and recalls, wiring diagrams, factory drawings, step-by-step photographs and a labour time guide and estimator.

Encyclopedias
Canadian Encyclopedia - A comprehensive information source about Canada and Canadians, for students, the general public and scholars. Includes articles written by experts, as well as web links and multimedia clips. The web site also includes links to the Youth Encyclopedia of Canada and Encyclopedia of Music in Canada. No library card is required to access these resources on the Internet.

Encyclopedia of British Columbia Online (In-Library use only) – BC people, places, arts, history, literature and more are covered in this special online encyclopedia. Includes articles, photographs, video and sound clips, web links, handy statistics, maps and diagrams.

World Book Online Reference Centre / Student – This is a great place for students or anyone to start their research on almost any topic. Includes full-text articles, web links, videos, animation, and sound.

World Book Advanced – Includes over a million primary source documents integrated with the encyclopedia’s content. Research and teaching tools include timelines, a citation builder and the ability to save searches.

Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos – Spanish language student encyclopedia from World Book.

L 'Encyclopédie Découverte – French language encyclopedia from World Book for younger users who are fluent in French. Also useful for older students and adults for whom French is a second language. This resource is paid for by the Provincial Government.

Encyclopedia Britannica Online Public Library Edition - contains comprehensive content for all your library patrons – from elementary students to college students, from business professionals to curious seniors. Whether it’s frogs or physics, gardening or geography, Britannica Online Public Library Edition covers it all.

Kids

Kids Search [EBSCO] – Kids in grades 3-8 can have fun searching for information in children’s magazines, reference books or a large image collection. Type in key words or browse in topics such as Animals, Arts and Crafts, Geography or Sports.

Searchasaurus – Dinosaurs help children in grades K-3 (and their parents) to find information in children’s magazines, reference books and a collection of photos, maps and flags.

NoveList K-8 [EBSCO] – Helps kids find lots of ideas for “what to read next.” Kids, parents and teachers can identify “just the right book,” whether it is a novel about female astronauts set in outer space, the next book in a series, or what to read after Harry Potter.

World Book Kids – Younger children will enjoy searching for information by keyword or topic. A special feature includes fun hands-on learning activities for elementary school age children. Law Resources

Electronic Law Library – An Internet subject guide to authoritative legal resources in BC and Canada. Developed by the Legal Services Society of BC and now maintained by the BC Courthouse Library Society. No library card is required to access this resource on the Internet.

QP LegalEze (In Library Use Only) – Provides access to current BC laws including current statutes (acts) and regulations. It also includes Hansard (the debates of the BC Legislative Assembly); First Reading, Amended and Third Reading Bills (draft laws); Full Text Orders-in-Council and Ministerial Orders; The British Columbia Gazette Part II; Rules of Court and Related Enactments; and more.

British Columbia Codes (in Library Use Only) – Includes the current BC Building Code (including Plumbing Services) and the BC Fire Code.

Vehicle Safety and Inspection Standards Online (In Library Use Only) Current vehicle safety and inspection standards and related BC legislation.

Medical / Health Information

Consumer Health Complete [EBSCO] – Health information for the general public, patients and health professionals. Includes mainstream medical information and holistic/alternative health information from popular and professional magazines, journals, reference books and reports. Also includes the Lexi-PAL Drug Guide, with up-to-date information on medications, natural products and vaccines available in the U.S.

Global Road Warrior - The ultimate guide to the world for travelers. Old Kimberley Public Library cards with KPLP on the barcode do not allow login. Please come in for an updated card with a code that will get you access to this resource.

Hospitality & Tourism Index - is a bibliographic database covering scholarly research and industry news relating to all areas of hospitality and tourism. This comprehensive index combines the records of three renowned collections: Cornell University’s former Hospitality database, Articles in Hospitality and Tourism (AHT), formerly co-produced by the Universities of Surrey and Oxford Brookes, and the Lodging, Restaurant & Tourism Index (LRTI), formerly produced by Purdue University. Together, this collection contains more than 490,000 records from 500 titles, with coverage going back to the mid 1960s.
